Following hard on the heels of her London success as Elena, Joyce DiDonato recently sang  in the Santa Fe Opera production of the same opera.  The response was so overwhelming that a extra performance was slotted into the schedule.  The staging was quite different from the much criticised London one (see here for photographs), as can be seen below.  It was a co production with the Metropolitan Opera, New York, so should be seen there in due course.

Although a different production entirely, James M. Keller (The New Mexican, July ) had a somewhat similar reaction to that of critics about the London production, viz.:- a splendid and authoritative performance from DiDonato but a "joyless production", "which was barely adequate on our modestly scaled stage and will seem stingier still in the larger expanse of the Met". He thought Pizzolato in fine voice but her portrayal "matronly rather than the manly" and had some reservations about the other singers. However, the Opera Warhorses site was altogether more positive about all the singers as well as the production talking of "impressive resources" being spent on the production.
