Donizetti's Anna Bolena

Washington National Opera recently staged this production that originated from the Dallas Opera. Reviews were a bit mixed,  Anne Midgette (Washington Post, September 16, 2012) summarised it as "an up-and-down evening. But on balance, the good outweighed the not good" while appraising Radvanovsky as "not yet a bel canto stylist. But she sang with clear fire, nailing note after note, and offered a strong character, a statuesque, classy woman who conveyed dignity in her strength and weakness".  Mike Paarlberg (Washington City Paper, September 28, 2012) was also very positive about her "Rich and fluid throughout, she doesn’t seem outside her comfort zone at any point" but was rather less complimentary about the staging although he liked the dogs that made a brief appearance. Simon Chin (DCMetroTheaterArts, September 17, 2012) found Lawless's production veering "uneasily between realist historical drama and symbolic abstraction"  and "a grab bag of ideas that often seem imposed upon the drama rather than organically rising out of the action ",  but was also very positive about Radvanovsky and thought Ganassi a "standout".
