Donizetti's Gianni di ParigiWexford Festival, Wexford, Ireland, October 23 - November 5, 2011.Photographs by Clive Barda, courtesy of the Wexford Festival
Photographs from the 2011 Wexford Festival production of Donizetti's Gianni di Parigi, one of three operas, with Thomas' La Cour de Célimène and Statkowski's Maria, all of which scored high marks with the critics. Rupert Christiansen in the Daily Telegraph (October 31, 2011) reported, "Framed by a merry, unpretentious production directed by Federico Grazzini, a cast of young, clean, steady voices served it up deftly, led by a nimble Czech coloratura soprano, Zuzana Markova, as the resourceful heroine." George Hall, The Guardian (October 26, 2011) was also very positive and, while acknowledging that it is a most lightweight of operas, "yet the dapper staging and top-quality singers make the trip worthwhile". James Dohre, Opera Today had reservations about the conducting but was otherwise complimentary as was Michael Dervan The Irish Times (October 27, 2011) "It’s the kind of thing one imagines that Donizetti could have written in his sleep, and the Wexford production is kept lively in the pit by Giacomo Sagripanti (though the sparkle is limited) as well as on stage." A broadcast by RTÉ of the November 5 performance can be found here.
