Donizetti's Caterina Cornaro

Nicosia, Cyprus, September 2004

Donizetti's Caterina Cornaro was performed in front of the Venetian walls of Nicosia, Cyprus, where the historical Caterina once walked, on September 22, 24 & 25, 2004, as part of the 2004 Kypria Festival. The photographs below are courtesy of Ayis Ioannides, the conductor.  Because of the circumstances, picture quality is a little variable. The production received a warm review in the March/April 2005 edition of Opera Now.

The opera was directed by the director Pierre Leon, conducted by Ayis Ioannides, with sets and costumes by Stefanos Athienitis and Lakis Yenethlis.

The cast was:-

Caterina: Margarita Elia

Gerardo: Yiannos Constantinou

Lusignano: Jeffrey Carl

Mocenigo: Pompeiu Harasteanu

Andrea Cornaro: Damon Ploumis

Strozzi: Yiannis Christopoulos

with the Cyprus State Orchestra and Limassol Aris choir

A well deserved bow for the cast and production team.
