Wagner Das Liebesverbot & Bellini I Capuleti et I MontecchiGlimmerglass Opera Festival, New York, July 5- August 24, 2008.The 2009 Glimmerglass Festival had a Shakespeare theme and included Wagner's Das Liebesverbot , based on Measure for Measure and heavily influenced by Italian opera of the time and Bellini's I Capuleti et I Montecchi, which is the same story as Romeo and Juliet but based on other sources. The two operas have a further link in that Wagner, initially at any rate, admired Bellini's operas ("Bellini: A Word in Season", 1837) and although, nearly 40 years later ( "The Destiny of Opera", 1871 ) he was rather less fulsome, describing I Capuleti et I Montecchi as "utterly threadbare", yet he could still recall the vivid impression that Schröder-Devrient had made in the role of Romeo. Wagner also wrote about his opera in an article in 1871, see http://users.belgacom.net/wagnerlibrary/prose/wagliebe.htm .
